Finally yesterday I visited the famous Beech Avenue on Kingston Lacy Estate in Dorset. This has been on my list of scenes for some years now. The Beech (Fagus sylvatica) trees are over 180 years old. One beech tree was planted on either side of the road for each day of the year, plus one for a leap year, totalling 731 specimens. Only 500 of the original beech trees survive today and unfortunately most of the rest will no doubt be felled over the next 3 decades. They are just too old now (Beech lifespan is about 200 years) and are becoming diseased and unstable. nearly 3 miles of ancient trees along a main road is quite a sight.
